Gamecock Basketball: Anthony Gill/Damontre Harris Update
South Carolina has been undergoing some changes with its coaching staff this offseason. Darrin Horn and his staff was let go due to the failure of creating a winning program in his four years as head coach.
Enter Frank Martin and his staff from Kansas State.
He brings credibility, success at a high level and an energetic attitude that should revitalize the program. You would imagine that the current members of the basketball team would be excited.
Anthony Gill and Damontre Harris were both rumored as potential transfer players shortly after Martin was hired. These are two individuals who are considered some of the best talent on this team and would certainly be a big blow if they were to leave. Fast forward a few days and Gill has officially been given permission from the University of South Carolina to seek transfer. There's been no word on Damontre Harris yet.
Let's look at both players and update you on the latest -
Anthony Gill Update:
Anthony Gill is all but gone from South Carolina. There were rumors that some ACC schools had already contacted Gill about the possibility of transferring to their school, even before receiving a release, and Gill has confirmed some of those ACC schools. North Carolina and Virginia are two schools that Gill has been in contact with so far. In this article, Gill mentions how he is excited about having the year off required during a transfer from one school to another.
I think this pretty much shows you that Gill is looking to leave USC. It's a shame because he's a young, talented individual who would be expected to make a big jump in his sophomore season at South Carolina. Gill plans to take an official visit to Virginia this weekend.
Damontre Harris Update:
There hasn't been much word on Harris recently. I would imagine he's still weighing his options and participating in team workouts as of now. However, if you believe this report, they are indicating that Harris is likely gone as well. We know Gill has been giving a release, or permission, to seek a transfer but nothing has come out for Damontre Harris. The article mentions this is being done as a precautionary measure by Frank Martin.
It's understandable for Harris to be interested in looking around but hopefully he will give Frank Martin enough time to show him how he'll be used in his system and allow the two of them time to get to know each other.
The Gamecocks need both players. The roster needs an influx of talent as it is and losing two of their better players would be a big blow to Frank Martin's chances at success in his first season. Hopefully he'll be able to at least convince Damontre Harris to stick around. Anthony Gill appears to have one foot out the door and the other isn't too far behind.
