Gamecock Basketball Recruiting: Will Willie Moore Be A Gamecock?
If you haven't heard, Frank Martin is killing it for the Gamecocks on the recruiting trail.
Martin landed four commitments over a span of two days and South Carolina is in prime position to land another now thanks to the recent events at Virginia Tech.
South Carolina and Virginia Tech were the two contenders to land guard Willie Moore, a former Dusquene signee who was released from his letter of intent. Virginia Tech was thought to be the main contender here for Moore and was all but destined to land him after his visit there on Monday.
Enter this afternoon when Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg was fired by VT and now this leaves Moore in an interesting situation.
Does he wait and see where Virginia Tech goes or does he take what the Gamecocks offer? If this would have happened a week ago today, I'd put money on Moore being a Gamecock.
Now, that was before South Carolina landed four commitments with two of them being at the guard position. Frank Martin is actively recruiting Sheldon Jeter, Willie Moore and Tevin Glass. Jeter and Moore are guards with Glass being the lone post player. We don't really know what direction he may want to go with this last scholarship available for the upcoming season.
The guard position has Eric Smith, Brenton Williams and now Tarik Phillip. Hall will join Brian Richardson and Damien Leonard at the shooting guard position. This could be a loaded area and may be tough to include Willie Moore at this point. South Carolina needs players with scoring ability at the guard position and could have that in Phillip and Hall. Do they want to add another guard or go with the big man in the post in Glass?
The Gamecocks have options. Something that didn't seem possible a mere week ago. It's funny how things change in the recruiting game.
At any event, South Carolina could be the front-runner for Willie Moore but we'll have to wait and see if Martin goes after him for the final spot. Moore was offered by Oregon today so he may elect to take some time to figure out all of his options. If this stretches out then I wouldn't expect Moore to be a Gamecock.
Time will tell.
