Frank Martin just hasn't had the luck he had hoped for when taking over as South Carolina men's head basketball coach.
Senior guard transfer LaShay Page has been ruled academically ineligible on Friday by the university and will not be allowed to participate in the remainder of the 2012-2013 season for the Gamecocks.
Page, a guard transfer from Southern Miss, was expected to take over some of the lack of scoring for the Gamecocks and was a double-digit scorer in his brief time, averaging 11.7 points per game. Page scored 20 points twice this season, including a season-high 22 points against Missouri State.
South Carolina will look to replace Page's scoring ability when Bruce Ellington returns to the basketball court full-time in the next few days. Ellington just finished up football season with the Gamecocks by capping the year with the game-winning touchdown against Michigan in the Outback Bowl with :11 seconds left in the game.
A tough break for the Gamecocks but something that will challenge Martin and this team going forward. We'll see what kind of response we have for this Gamecocks' squad soon as the men return to the court in their final non-conference game this Saturday against SC State.
