The Big Spur is reporting today that kicker Nick St. Germain has decided to leave the South Carolina football team, effective immediately.
St. Germain signed with the Gamecocks in 2012 out of Powder Springs, Georgia after receiving an offer from the Gamecocks in January of 2012. Up until that point, St. Germain had offers from smaller schools like Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State and South Alabama. However, an offer from an upcoming SEC power was certainly worth jumping at and St. Germain became a Gamecock.
While redshirting in 2012 was expected, St. Germain entered the 2013 season with hopes of landing one of the kicking jobs for the Gamecocks. It was a wide open race with all unproven candidates but a true freshman from Texas by the name of Elliott Fry won the job in August and effectively put St. Germain on the bench. Landon Ard won the kickoff specialist duties as has been in that role all year long just like Fry. He's not listed as the backup at either kicking position and Coach Spurrier has said recently that Elliott Fry will go on scholarship as soon as one comes available.
This basically left St. Germain as the odd man out and thus he decided a transfer was in his best interest. There's no word on where he'll end up at this point but we certainly wish Nick St. Germain the best of luck in his future opportunities.
