The nation's number one football recruit for the class of 2014 was considered a long shot for the Gamecocks to begin with but South Carolina is now off the table for DE Da'Shawn Hand.

Hand has eliminated South Carolina, along with Virginia Tech, to come up with a top three schools of Michigan, Alabama and Florida. The Gamecocks were fighting to stay near the top, hoping to continue to have a chance with Hand and sell him on the opportunity to replace Jadeveon Clowney but it appears those efforts weren't enough for the Gamecocks.

The surprising choice here is to see Virginia Tech eliminated. The Hokies were considered a long-time favorite for Hand but it appears the nation's best recruit will focus on some of the top programs in college football.

The Gamecocks will move on from here and try to focus on several other highly recruited defensive end prospects like Lorenzo Carter, Dante Sawyer, Andrew Williams and former signee Jhaustin Thomas.

South Carolina currently has five commitments in the class of 2014.
