With Thursday's news that Shaq Wiggins would stay committed to Georgia, the Gamecocks were thought to be left out in the cold in their efforts of locking down another cornerback prospect in the 2013 class.
Well, it appears South Carolina has started to show significant interest in Port Saint Lucie, FL prospect Justin Williams.
The #Gamecocks now showing significant interest in DB Justin Williams, Treasure Coast coach Irvin Jones says.— Jeff Greer (@jeffgreer) January 17, 2013
Williams, a three-star prospect according to 247sports.com's composite rankings, received early interest from the Gamecocks in the beginning with an offer but the Gamecocks were more focused on players like Wiggins and former Gamecock commitment, Brendan Langley, who were higher on their recruiting board.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound recruit has listed offers from Michigan State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Purdue, Iowa State and a few others. He's already taken visits to Purdue, Cincinnati and Marshall and is currently in East Lansing this weekend visiting the Spartans.
The obvious question here what kind of push will the Gamecocks have towards Williams. The early offer shows you that South Carolina had interest in him initially. So that's a good sign for Williams when it comes to the Gamecocks. There is a need for another cornerback in this class and the misses on Langley and Wiggins will likely give South Carolina a push towards making Williams a priority during the final weeks of the recruiting season.
This will be a name to watch here as National Signing Day gets closer. Williams will have one visit left after this weekend and there's a good chance that he could take that visit to Columbia. If he does, he could be a guy to place on commitment watch.
