A name that seems better suited for the 'Game of Thrones' is now the latest star-studded defensive player to commit to the Gamecocks.
South Carolina picked up a huge commitment in the class of 2015 with the commitment of Shameik Blackshear on Tuesday. Blackshear debuted as a five-star recruit in the initial 247sports.com Top 247 rankings for the class of 2015. Blackshear is the number one prospect in South Carolina in 2015 along with the nation's top weakside defensive end and No. 14 player overall regardless of position.
If you think those are some pretty big accolades, it is.
Blackshear has drawn comparisons to South Carolina's current Heisman Trophy candidate, Jadeveon Clowney. It's easy to see why with Blackshear's current size at 6-foot-4, 235-pounds. He's not as ready as Jadeveon Clowney was at the same stage but not many recruits are considering what Clowney has done since being a sophomore in college. Blackshear still has two more seasons of high school football to grow and get better as a player. He's got all the things you can't really teach in the fact that he's tall, athletic and extremely quick as a pass rusher. He'll need more coaching to solidify his status as an all-star type player but the ability is there.
South Carolina should thank Deke Adams and Everette Sands for their efforts in landing Blackshear's commitment. Both coaches did an excellent job here building a relationship with Blackshear and have given him exactly what he needed to see and hear to make him solid on being a Gamecock.
Blackshear picked the Gamecocks over schools like Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Clemson and a few others.
With his offer list and lofty ranking, this is a big time commitment for South Carolina and continues to show why South Carolina is going to be in the running for championships for years to come.
