There is a report on FootballScoop.com that is saying they have learned that South Carolina assistant head coach in charge of defense Ellis Johnson will be named the head coach at Southern Miss.

No timetable is listed on the site this afternoon for when the announcement is to be made but it appeared in recent news articles that an announcement could come as early as the beginning of this week.

If this report is true then South Carolina will have lost a great defensive mind. Johnson has guided South Carolina to top ten national rankings in several categories for defense this season and is a well respected coach in and around the state of South Carolina.

Johnson has served as a head coach while he was at The Citadel but the return to the head coaching ranks must have been too much for Ellis to turn down. Johnson is paid extremely well here at South Carolina and reports are he wouldn't be making much more at Southern Mississippi then he is here currently at USC.

If Johnson is truly gone, South Carolina will certainly miss him.

For now...let's chalk this up on the rumor mill until we get official word.
