The last time South Carolina was in the mix for a No.1 prospect coming out of high school, they ended up with Jadeveon Clowney.

The No.1 recruit in the 2014 class named the Gamecocks in his top five list today.

2014's Da'shawn Hand named his five top programs in the running for his recruitment and, in no particular order, they are Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

The big thing here for the Gamecocks is that Hand has yet to visit South Carolina's campus. This should tell you that South Carolina has a great program to sell nationally to top recruits and landing in Hand's top five is quite a feat.

South Carolina's success with Jadeveon Clowney is a big selling point for Hand. He is able to see the national attention that Clowney has landed over the past two seasons and South Carolina is willing to move Clowney around on the line into a position that will give him the most success. Hand is a guy who projects as a defensive end at the next level and could eventually have similar types of success as Clowney.

The Gamecocks will be looking for a star defensive end to replace Clowney after he enters the 2014 NFL draft following his junior season.

Da'shawn Hand has the makeup and ability to be that guy for the Gamecocks.
