Dawn Staley has the Lady Gamecocks rocking right now.
South Carolina traveled down to Gainesville and held off a late Florida charge to beat the Gators by a score of 49-44.
The Gamecocks picked up some clutch performances from Markeisha Grant and La'Keisha Sutton who both scored 11 points a piece for the Gamecocks. Sutton had two free throws in the closing seconds that sealed the victory for South Carolina.
South Carolina had a 31-15 lead at halftime but Florida had a hot start in the second half outscoring USC 11-2 to start the half. South Carolina countered and would eventually lead 42-27. Florida, somehow, mounted a furious comeback again and pushed the score to single digits as the game was coming to a close.
A few defensive stops and rebounds by Sancheon White and Charenee Stephens eventually helped put Sutton at the line to seal the deal.
The win is the Gamecocks eight straight win and pushed their overall season record to 14-2 on the season. USC is 3-0 in SEC play and with their victory over a Top 25 ranked Vanderbilt team earlier this week, South Carolina should find themselves firmly in the Top 25 rankings for the first time since 2003.
The Lady Gamecocks are getting better and better as the season goes on and this is a team that appears to be fighting for a future NCAA berth.
Another good win for South Carolina and another step in the building of the women's basketball program.
