Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina escape with 24-21 win over Navy
Marcus Lattimore understands his role for the Gamecocks. He's the workhorse for the Gamecocks and he'll have to carry the load for them all year long.
I don't think he minds.
Marcus Lattimore rushed for 246 yards, a career high, with three touchdowns on 37 carries tonight as a fourth quarter touchdown gave the Gamecocks a three-point lead that they would keep the rest of the way to win 24-21 over the Navy Midshipmen. Lattimore pushed his season statistics to a total of 534 rushing yards with seven touchdowns on 87 carries.
The Gamecocks had a tough time on defense shutting down the Navy triple-option attack as they racked up 274 yards rushing with fullback Alexander Teich leading the way with 92 yards and one touchdown. South Carolina had to come up with a interception with about one minute left in the game to seal the deal for the Gamecocks. Antonio Allen continues his strong play this season with 10 tackles and he also had the game-clinching interception. Defensive lineman Devin Taylor and Melvin Ingram added nine and eight tackles respectively.
Stephen Garcia threw the ball better tonight but still has room for improvement. He had 204 yards passing on 18 out of 25 attempts tonight with no touchdowns and one interception. The big thing was Garcia seemed to get other receivers involved as Jason Barnes, Nick Jones, and Justice Cunningham each had three receptions or more. Star receiver Alshon Jeffery didn't start due to a violation of team rules and he finished with just two catches for 35 yards.
Kicker Jay Wooten nailed a 48-yard field goal that ended up being the difference in the end. He's showing off a strong leg for the Gamecocks and continues to prove he's ready in the clutch for South Carolina.
The Gamecocks get to stay at home next weekend when Vanderbilt brings their 3-0 record to Williams-Brice. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be on either ESPN or ESPN2. The big thing here is they have found a way to win close games the past few weeks and this should be used a learning experience for this football team.
They also know that number 21 in the backfield will be glad to carry this team on his back.
