The worst kept secret in Columbia has been confirmed as several sources are reporting that Ray Tanner will be named the next Athletic Director and the University of South Carolina.
President Harris Pastides has had Ray Tanner in mind ever since Eric Hyman resigned a few weeks back to take the AD position at Texas A&M. The announcement wasn't made sooner due to Pastides being out of the country but the brief time between Hyman's resignation, and the soon to be announcement of Tanner, did nothing to change Pastides mind.
Tanner has had a brilliant career at South Carolina that includes two national championships, several College World Series appearances and other accolades that will be hard to matched. Tanner has prior administration experience during his time at N.C. State. However, it has been a long time since he's served in that role.
It appears, though, that Tanner will bring an energetic presence to the Athletic Department and excite the group of employees who will work for Ray Tanner. He's one of the most recognized faces in South Carolina and should be able to use his persona as an excellent fundraiser for the Gamecocks. Ray Tanner will likely have some great people working for him behind the scenes, but if he can continue to bridge the gap that Eric Hyman started, he should be very successful.
This is a move that seemed destined to happen when Eric Hyman resigned. Ray Tanner will now call the shots.
Just in a different way.
