South Carolina opened the 2012 baseball season the same way it finished the 2011 season:

Winning.

The Gamecocks swept VMI in three games played this weekend as they received several strong pitching performances from their aces on the staff and a few big hits from some newcomers as well.

Here's a quick rundown of each game played:

Friday: Michael Roth pitched six strong innings giving up one run with no walks and six strikeout while Adam Matthews was 3-of-4 from the plate. Tanner English and Grayson Greiner were both 2-of-3 batting and Forrest Koumas picked up the save for the Gamecocks in the 2-1 victory.

Saturday(Game 1): South Carolina picked up another close victory by a score of 3-2 with 2 hits a piece from batters LB Dantzler, Dante Rosenberg, Joey Pankake and Christian Walker. Matt Price started the game going 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Ethan Carter was the real story of the night as he pitched the final four innings for USC with six strikeouts and zero walks to earn the win for the Gamecocks.

Saturday(Game 2): The bats came alive for the Gamecocks with a 13-1 victory and the final in the three-game series to give USC the sweep on the weekend. LB Dantzler and TJ Costen both delivered homeruns for South Carolina and Kyle Martin went 3-of-5 from the plate. Colby Holmes pitched 5.0 innings for South Carolina earning the win as he threw six strikeouts and zero walks.

The big thing this weekend was how the pitching staff picked up right where they left off last season. The front-line starters of Roth, Price and Holmes delivered outstanding performances and will only get better from here. They also got a boost from Ethan Carter in his return to Gamecock baseball as well as Tyler Webb in Friday's game as well.

Another nice surprise was the efforts from the newcomers this weekend. LB Dantzler was a name mentioned all during practice and you can tell he's got the talent to play at this level. Catcher Grayson Greiner was also impressive from the plate finishing the weekend hitting .400 for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks got off to a great start and look poised to continue going forward.

The next opponent will be Elon who come to Carolina Stadium on Friday, February 24th at 3:00 p.m.
