Devin Taylor and Jadeveon Clowney are having themselves quite a summer. Throw in DeVonte Holloman and the Gamecock defense looks like its primed for a strong 2012 season.

Taylor, Clowney and Holloman were named to two different award watch lists today as Holloman was named to the Butkus Watch List while Clowney and Taylor were named to the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List.

The Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense of defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, and linebackers who set up no father than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. This would be where Taylor and Clowney come in. Both book-ends for the Gamecocks have already found themselves on a few other defensive watch lists this offseason and this is just another one to add for the two Gamecocks.

The Butkus Watch List is given annually to the nation's best linebacker. Holloman is one of 51 candidates, including 16 from the SEC, to be nominated for the preseason watch list. The senior is expected to step up big for the Gamecocks this season and will be one of the players who should have a big season in 2012.

Taylor, Clowney and Holloman are all part of a defense that has its eyes on being one of the nation's best. The nominations are well-deserved at this point but the only place it really matters is on the field.

It's about time football season got here. We've missed you.
