USC Falls To Auburn 79-64
South Carolina wasted a golden opportunity today as they fell to the Auburn Tigers, who were previously winless in SEC play. The Gamecocks had another cold shooting night as they shot 34% from the field and 21% from the 3-point line. USC was also outrebounded by the Tigers 47 to 35 rebounds. Ramon Galloway stepped up in Lakeem Jackson's absence to lead all scorers with 20 points. Sam Muldrow finished the day with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Auburn was a pretty bad team and carried an RPI ranking of 307 into this game. Scott Hood from Gamecock Central listed these were the 5 teams ahead of Auburn in the RPI rankings: Savannah St, SIU-Edwardsville, Norfolk St, North Dakota, Manhattan. Wow. I'm not saying the SEC basketball is the best in the land but Auburn was pretty down in the college basketball world. South Carolina had no excuse to lose to a team like Auburn, at home no less, and wasted a perfect chance to get to 4-2 in the SEC and keep their name in the NCAA bubble watch.
There's no telling where the basketball team will go from here but I just have a feeling this will be a game that could hurt the Gamecocks for the rest of the season. They play 4 of the next 6 games on the road and will travel to Baton Rouge to play LSU. South Carolina HAS to win this basketball game to salvage any sort of hope for a good season this year. I know this team is young and inexperienced but at this point that's no excuse. They've beaten Florida, Vanderbilt, and Clemson(who just beat a #22 ranked FSU team this afternoon) so you know they are capable. We just have to be consistent from start to finish.
